Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays are restorations made from durable materials such as porcelain, gold, or composite resin. These pieces are bonded directly to the damaged areas of the tooth.

• Inlays are used to fill the area within the cusp tips of a tooth, similar to a filling.
• Onlays are a more extensive form of restoration that covers one or more cusps (the pointed edges) of the tooth.

While gold has traditionally been used for inlays and onlays, porcelain has become increasingly popular due to its strength and ability to match the natural color of your teeth.

The process for inlays and onlays typically involves two visits:

• First Visit: The damaged area of the tooth is removed, and the tooth is prepared for the restoration. An impression of your tooth is made to ensure the perfect fit. A temporary sealant is applied, and your restoration is sent to a lab for fabrication.
• Second Visit: Once the restoration is ready, the temporary sealant is removed. The dentist will check the fit of your inlay or onlay. If everything is satisfactory, the restoration will be bonded to the tooth using a strong resin and polished to a smooth, natural finish.

• Inlays: These are ideal for repairing teeth that have grooves or cavities that affect the tooth’s inner surface, but not the cusp. Inlays are stronger and longer-lasting than regular fillings, especially gold inlays, which are known for their durability.
• Onlays: These are used for more extensive damage, such as when the cusp or biting surface of the tooth is affected. If the damage is significant but doesn’t require a full crown, an onlay is a great option. Like inlays, onlays require a temporary restoration while the final piece is created in the lab.
